Karen Elson Gets Made Over in Marble for “Garage”

Garage magazine is taking its latest issue into the next dimension. After releasing a series of covers photographed by Phil Poynter of Lara Stone, Joan Smalls, Kendall Jenner, Cara Delevingne, and Binx Walton wearing Beats by Dre headphones, the magazine is debuting a cover of Karen Elson photographed by Francesco Vezzoli.

Similar to the Poynter covers, Vezzoli’s transforms into three dimensions with the use of the Garage app, available on the Apple App Store. While Poynter has the buzzy angle down with this season’s most viral stars in the world’s most viral headgear, Vezzoli’s stoic cover is a meditation on the connection of past, present, and future. For the cover image, he photographed Elson in a classical fashion, with her alabaster complexion enhanced and dramatized by Pat McGrath. Call that the present. Vezzoli then 3-D scanned Elson, and sent that scan to a quarry in Tuscany where it was sculpted out of marble and painted in a typical, bright Roman fashion, tying the past and future into one process. Of the experience working in many media, Vezzoli told Style.com, “It was an exciting honor to work with the ultramodern beauty of Miss Elson and turn her into the petrified icon of antique glamour''.
