New York City Is Naming a Street After Oscar de la Renta

"The great thing about fashion is that it always looks forward," said de Blasio, quoting de la Renta at the conclusion of his remarks. But the mayor added a few final words of his own: "Can I get an amen?"

Taking the podium at the home of Made Fashion Week in Manhattan on Tuesday evening, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that New York City will be honoring the late designer Oscar de la Renta with a street in his name. The mayor said the designer was a "giant of the industry" and that "no one is more deserving than him of that."

The bill, which re-names a total of 56 thoroughfares and public places in the city, was signed Feb. 5. The bill does not specify where the street will be located, nor did the mayor reveal the fact in his remarks Tuesday night. Instead, he focused on the late designer's passion and legacy. "He will forever be ingrained in the fabric of the city," de Blasio said.In addition to the street name, the Mayor also announced that the city will be tripling its $5 million financial commitment to Made in New York, a fund designed to benefit the city’s fashion industry "in every phase of the production cycle, from the first creative idea to the garments being loaded onto the truck." Standing on stage alongside his wife Chirlane McCray (who wore a jacket by NYC designer Anna Quan), de Blasio thanked the fashion industry for providing the city with $2 billion in tax revenue and providing 180,000 people with $11 billion in wages.
